The 60-second answer
AMCAT and eLitmus are employability tests, not companies. You take one, get a score or percentile, and that result shortlists you for interviews with partner companies. AMCAT is broader and adaptive with optional domain modules; eLitmus is a tougher, percentile-based test with negative marking. Take AMCAT for reach, add eLitmus if you are targeting firms that hire through it, aim high in every section, and keep a clean resume ready, because the test gets you the call and the resume backs it in the interview.
If you are doing an off-campus job search in India, these tests are a common front door: a good score puts your profile in front of recruiters who would never see it otherwise. This guide covers how AMCAT and eLitmus are formatted and scored, which to take, how to prepare, and where your resume fits in.
What AMCAT and eLitmus are
Both are standardised assessments that measure aptitude and, in some cases, domain skills, then match your result to hiring companies. Instead of applying to each company one by one, you take one test and your score opens multiple doors. They are especially useful for off-campus seekers and students from colleges that do not attract many on-campus drives. A third platform, CoCubes, works similarly and is used by employers such as Capgemini.
AMCAT: format and scoring
- Compulsory sections: English, Quantitative Ability, and Logical Ability.
- A personality module, plus optional domain modules such as Computer Programming, that unlock role-specific opportunities.
- Adaptive: the difficulty adjusts to your answers as you go.
- You get a detailed employability report and a score; it is typically valid for about a year and feeds job listings on the platform.
eLitmus pH Test: format and scoring
- Three sections: Quantitative, Problem Solving (logical reasoning), and Verbal.
- 120 minutes, with negative marking, so accuracy beats attempting everything.
- Scored on percentile rather than raw marks; a strong percentile opens interviews with partner companies.
- "Content challenged": fewer questions, higher difficulty. The score is typically valid for about two years.

| Feature | AMCAT | eLitmus pH | CoCubes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sections | English, Quant, Logical (+ domain) | Quant, Problem Solving, Verbal | Aptitude + domain (varies) |
| Negative marking | Usually none | Yes | Varies |
| Scoring | Score + report | Percentile | Score |
| Validity | ~1 year | ~2 years | Varies |
| Best for | Reach + domain roles | Tougher; firms that hire via eLitmus | Company-specific (e.g. Capgemini) |

Which one should you take?
| If you want... | Lean towards |
|---|---|
| Maximum reach across many companies | AMCAT |
| Domain-specific opportunities (e.g. programming) | AMCAT (with the domain module) |
| Companies that hire specifically via eLitmus | eLitmus |
| A tougher test where a high percentile stands out | eLitmus |
Many serious seekers take both: AMCAT for breadth and eLitmus for the companies that use it. Check which platform your target companies actually hire through before you pay for a test.
How to prepare
- Quantitative: percentages, ratios, time-speed-distance, permutations, number theory. eLitmus leans harder here.
- Logical / problem solving: data sufficiency, cryptarithmetic (common in eLitmus), series, and puzzles.
- Verbal: grammar, reading comprehension, and vocabulary in context.
- Domain (AMCAT): if you add Computer Programming, revise C/C++/Java basics, data structures, and output-prediction questions.
- Mocks: take timed, full-length mocks so pacing and (for eLitmus) negative-marking strategy feel natural.
A worked eLitmus-style problem
eLitmus problem solving leans heavily on cryptarithmetic, where each letter stands for a distinct digit. These reward pattern recognition, not memorisation. A classic example:
S E N D + M O R E = M O N E Y
Each letter is a different digit. Because two 4-digit numbers sum to a 5-digit one, the leading M must be 1. That forces S to 8 or 9, and working column by column with the carries gives O = 0, and so on.
Solution: 9567 + 1085 = 10652 (S=9, E=5, N=6, D=7, M=1, O=0, R=8, Y=2).
You will not see this exact puzzle, but the method (leading letter carries a 1, solve column by column) is what the test rewards. Practise 15 to 20 of these before test day, and with negative marking, only commit once the logic is tight.
Your score gets the call, your resume backs it
A strong AMCAT or eLitmus score gets your profile shortlisted, but recruiters still read your resume before and during the interview. Make sure it is one page, single column, and parseable, with:
- Your degree and marks, so they match the eligibility filters.
- 2 to 3 projects with a stack and a measurable outcome.
- A skills line that matches the roles you are shortlisted for.
- Coding-profile links if you took a programming module.

Frequently asked questions
What is AMCAT?+
AMCAT (Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test) is one of India's largest employability tests, recognised by a large network of companies. It has compulsory sections in English, Quantitative Ability, and Logical Ability, a personality module, and optional domain modules such as Computer Programming. Your score and detailed report feed job opportunities on the platform, and the score is typically valid for about a year.
What is the eLitmus pH Test?+
The eLitmus pH (Hiring Potential) Test has three sections, Quantitative, Problem Solving (logical reasoning), and Verbal, taken in 120 minutes with negative marking. It is scored on percentile, and a strong percentile opens interviews with partner companies. It is known as a "content-challenged" test: fewer questions, but harder. The score is typically valid for about two years.
AMCAT vs eLitmus: which should I take?+
AMCAT is broader and adaptive, with domain modules and a large company network, so it maximises reach. eLitmus is tougher and percentile-based, and some product and services firms hire specifically through it. Many candidates take AMCAT for reach and add eLitmus if they are targeting companies that use it. CoCubes is a third platform some employers use (for example, Capgemini runs its assessment on CoCubes).
Is there negative marking in these tests?+
eLitmus has negative marking, so guessing blindly hurts you, answer only when you can eliminate options. AMCAT generally does not penalise wrong answers, but always confirm the current pattern before your test, as formats change.
Do AMCAT or eLitmus guarantee a job?+
No. They shortlist you for interviews with partner companies based on your score; you still have to clear the interview. Your resume also still matters, since recruiters read it alongside your score before and during the interview.
What score do I need on AMCAT or eLitmus?+
It varies by company and role. For eLitmus, a percentile around the 80s in each section is a common target for good opportunities. For AMCAT, higher section scores unlock more and better job listings. Aim high in every section rather than relying on one strong area.
How much do these tests cost, and can I retake them?+
Both are paid, typically in the four-figure-rupee range (confirm the current fee on the official site, as it changes). You can retake after a waiting period to improve your score, and a better later score generally supersedes the earlier one for new opportunities. Treat the first attempt seriously rather than banking on a retake.
Are AMCAT and eLitmus still relevant in 2026?+
Yes, especially for off-campus seekers and students from colleges with few on-campus drives, because they put your profile in front of companies you could not reach otherwise. That said, many large employers now run their own assessments (NQT, InfyTQ, NTH, GenC), so use AMCAT and eLitmus to widen your reach, not as your only channel.
