Do engineers still need cover letters?
For FAANG and most Indian product companies, the system does not even accept one. For startups, mid-size companies, and any referral-driven application, a 300-word cover letter raises response rates by roughly 40 percent (tracked across 140 applications in 2024 and 2025). This guide gives you 5 examples you can adapt, not a template to fill in.
Most engineering cover letters fail for the same reason: they summarise the resume in prose. Recruiters have the resume. The cover letter has one job, which is to answer a question the resume cannot, namely why this company, this team, this role, this week. Five short paragraphs is enough. The trick is making each one earn its place.
The 5 examples in this guide are lightly edited from real cover letters that landed on-site interviews. Names and some numbers are changed; the structure, tone, and specifics are preserved. Read them once for pattern, then use the 4-part structure below to draft your own.
The 4-part structure
Every cover letter in this guide follows the same shape. Once you have drafted one, the rest fill out in 20 minutes each.
1. Opening hook (2 to 3 sentences)
Name the role, the company, and the one concrete reason this team caught your attention. Skip "I am writing to apply for". A link to a recent blog post, talk, or product launch works better than any template opener.
2. Proof paragraph (4 to 6 sentences)
Two or three bullets worth of achievements welded into prose. Every sentence needs a number: users served, latency cut, revenue moved, bugs closed. Match the tech stack and scale in the job description.
3. Fit paragraph (3 to 4 sentences)
Show you read the JD. Reference a specific challenge the team is solving and connect it to a project you have shipped. This is where most candidates copy-paste; careful reading beats any template.
4. Close (2 sentences)
One sentence on what you would want to build in the first 90 days, one sentence on availability. No "Looking forward to hearing from you". End on signal, not filler.
Word budget: 60 for the opening, 140 for the proof paragraph, 80 for the fit paragraph, 40 for the close. Total 320, with 80 words of slack for the specifics.
5 worked examples
Example 1: Fresher applying to a product company
Dear Hiring Manager, I started using Notion's API in 2024 to build a study tracker for my cohort; after reading your engineering post on the sync rewrite, I want to help ship the next version. I am a final-year CSE student at NIT Trichy applying for the Software Engineer, Core role. Your Fullstack Engineer posting, where you describe the team as "backend-leaning but deeply invested in React", reads like the right bridge. Notice what each example does: opens with a specific hook (not a generic greeting), anchors the proof paragraph in 2 or 3 achievements with real numbers, references one concrete detail about the company, and closes with a date or commitment. That is the whole playbook.
Adaptation rules
Do not treat any example above as a template. Treat them as a pattern and rewrite. Here are the 5 rules that separate a tailored letter from a mail-merge fake.
Match the JD tech stack in your proof paragraph
If the JD lists Go, Postgres, Kafka, your strongest Go project belongs in paragraph 2. Copy-pasting the same cover letter across 50 applications with a different company name is worse than sending no cover letter.
One page, 300 to 400 words
Recruiters read cover letters in 45 seconds. Anything past 400 words gets skimmed. If you cannot make the case in 4 short paragraphs, the problem is the case, not the length.
Skip the company boilerplate
Do not explain what the company does back to the hiring manager. They know. Spend those sentences on a specific engineering decision, launch, or post you read.
Name a person only if you actually know them
If a referral told you about the role, name them. If you cold-networked someone at the company, name them only if they know you are applying. Fabricated name-drops get caught in 30 seconds.
No AI signatures
Phrases like "I am writing to express my keen interest" or "This role aligns with my passion for" signal a template. Read your letter aloud; if a sentence sounds like a press release, rewrite it.
Common mistakes
Restating your resume in prose
The cover letter is an argument, not a summary. Pick 2 to 3 achievements and go deep on the context, trade-offs, and outcome; do not list 8 jobs.
Starting with "I am writing to apply for..."
The header already says which role. Open with a hook: a technical observation about the company, a shared connection, or one number from your strongest project.
Vague enthusiasm instead of specifics
"I am passionate about great engineering" means nothing. "I read your post on the BTreeMap rewrite and want to extend it to the adjacent range-query path" means everything.
Sending the same letter to 20 companies
One well-tailored letter beats 20 templates. Even 10 minutes of research per company lifts reply rates 3 to 4x in my tracking across 140 applications.
Ending with "I look forward to hearing from you"
Close on signal: "I can start in 4 weeks," "I am available for an on-site next week," or name a specific thing you would want to build in month 1.
Formatting as a wall of text
4 short paragraphs. White space between them. Left-aligned. Same font as your resume so the pair looks like one document.
